Walsh Powers Trojans to Victory
The Trojans defeated New Bedford Whalers in the first game of the Brad Martin Tournament at Plymouth North High School on a beautiful Tuesday morning, 3-1, to improve to a perfect 5-0. Getting the nod for his first Varsity baseball start was Junior RHP PJ Walsh. Walsh managed to strike out 9 batters while allowing only 3 hits, 1 BB, 1 earned run in his 6 + innings of work throwing an efficient 78 pitches. The Whalers opened up the scoring in the 1st inning after getting a leadoff walk to start the game followed by the first strikeout for Walsh and a RBI single to the large outfield. Walsh recorded three K's in the first while facing 5 batters. The Trojans bats rallied behind their young starter to equal the score at the end of the 1st. BR opened with a leadoff single for Trahon, who would later score the Trojans first run of the game.
The Trojans added just one run in the 4th inning, after having the bases loaded with no outs to start the inning. Two strikeouts later Nick Andrews drew a walk to plate Jon Livolsi from third. The Whalers dodged a bullet only allowing 1 run on 2 hits, an error, and a walk and three strikeouts to end the 4th inning.
After his first inning nerves Walsh was lights out only allowing 2 hits and four base runners after the 1st inning. “I was nervous in the first inning but settled in and felt comfortable and confident. I felt strong with my curveball and had a lot of control with it,” Walsh said about his start. His curveball was strong and helped him record 9Ks. After a leadoff HBP to start the 7th Coach Kearney sommonsed to the pen and that was all for Walsh. Walsh went 6 + innings throwing 78 pitches, allowing 3 Hits, recording 9Ks and walking one. In to seal the deal for the Trojans was their work horse lefty Alex McGrath. McGrath recorded a looking strikeout to get the first out in the 7th, followed by a fly out and a ground out to end the first game of the Brad Martin Tournament and the Trojans won 3-1.
Notable offensive players for BR: Sophomore Colin Trahon 3-3 with a single, double, and a triple as well as a stolen base. Senior Cory Wayslow 1-3 with a single, reached on an error in the 4th, and fielder’s choice.
The Trojans are back at Plymouth North on Thursday to play the host team (Plymouth North) in the Championship game, at 2 PM, as Plymouth North defeated the Silver Lake Lakers in exciting extra inning fashion. PN Junior Joe Walsh hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th to send Plymouth North (5-1) past Silver Lake (2-2), 7-6.
Plymouth North junior Nick Lloyd had hit a two-run home run to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Probable pitcher for the Trojans is Senior Captain Jack Connolly.
